Email Creation and Sending
In Salesforce Marketing Cloud (SFMC), emails are created and sent using Email Studio. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to create and send emails in SFMC.
- Email Creation in SFMC
Step 1: Access Email Studio
- Log in to Salesforce Marketing Cloud.
- Navigate to Email Studio → Content Builder.
Step 2: Create a New Email
- Click Create → Select Email Message.
- Choose how to create your email:
- Templates: Pre-designed layouts that can be customized.
- HTML Paste: Upload your own HTML email.
- Text-Only Email: For plain-text emails.
- Drag-and-Drop Editor: For easy design without coding.
- Enter email name, subject line, and optional preheader text.
Step 3: Design the Email
- Use Content Blocks (text, images, buttons, etc.) to build your email.
- Add personalization using AMPscript or Dynamic Content.
- Preview the email to ensure formatting is correct.
- Click Save & Close.
- Email Sending in SFMC
Emails can be sent using different methods depending on your use case:
- User-Initiated Send (Manual Batch Send)
- Used for one-time, bulk email sends from a Data Extension.
Steps to Send:
- Navigate to Email Studio → Email Sends.
- Click User-Initiated Sends.
- Select your email from Content Builder.
- Choose the Audience (Data Extension or List).
- Define send options (from name, reply-to email, suppression lists).
- Click Send or Schedule.
- Salesforce Sends (Sending from Sales/Service Cloud)
- Used for sending to Salesforce Leads, Contacts, or Campaign Members.
Steps to Send:
- In Salesforce, select a Campaign, Lead, or Contact list.
- Click Send via Marketing Cloud.
- Select the email template.
- Configure the send settings (subject, from name, etc.).
- Click Send.
- Triggered Send (Automated Email via API or Journey Builder)
- Used for automated, real-time email sends based on an event (e.g., form submission, order confirmation).
Method 1: Triggered Sends in Email Studio
- Go to Email Studio → Triggered Sends.
- Create a new Triggered Send Definition.
- Select the email from Content Builder.
- Define the API trigger settings.
- Activate the Triggered Send.
Method 2: Using Journey Builder
- Open Journey Builder in SFMC.
- Create a New Journey (Single Send or Multi-Step).
- Add an Entry Source (e.g., API Event, Data Extension).
- Drag Send Email activity into the journey.
- Select the email template.
- Configure send settings and activate the journey.
- Testing & Tracking
Test Your Email
- Use Preview & Test in Content Builder.
- Send a Test Email to yourself before the final send
Track Email Performance
- Go to Email Studio → Tracking.
- Monitor open rates, click rates, bounce rates, and unsubscribes.
Final Notes
- For One-Time Campaigns → Use User-Initiated Sends.
- For Salesforce Contacts → Use Salesforce Sends.
- For Real-Time Emails → Use Triggered Sends.
